Melbourne's first game against a side called St Kilda came in July 1859, but that side had no connection to the future VFL team.
The modern-day Saints were instead born from a merger between South Yarra (not related to the club who Melbourne played their first competitive match against) and the St Kilda Cricketers' Club in 1874.
Sometimes known as the Saints, but more often as the Seasiders, St Kilda were deplorable in their first few seasons in the league, failing to win a game in their first three seasons. They won their first ever VFL match against Melbourne on protest but won just one more in their first six seasons. Considering their early troubles it's no surprise that the Demons hold their best record against any foundation VFL club against the Saints.
They also protested against a Melbourne victory in Round 12, 1925 on the grounds that Gerry Donnelly wasn't eligible to be playing for the Redlegs. The VFL dismissed the match protest but forced Donnelly to cross to North Melbourne who he was residentially tied to.
Twice in the modern era the Demons have caused St Kilda coaches to be sacked. Stan Alves after the 1998 Semi Final and Grant Thomas after the 2006 Elimination Final.
