Zoned to St Kilda, the son of 53 game North Melbourne player Mick Grambeau could gone to Arden Street under the father/son rule, but North opted not to recruit him. He made his debut as a ruckman in 1971, but couldn't find a regular spot with the Saints. In 1975 he tried to cross to North Melbourne but couldn't get a clearance, and at the end of the year joined Melbourne along with Allan Davis and a cash payment in exchange for Carl Ditterich.
Grambeau was used in a variety of key positions at Melbourne, initially forward, then as a centre-half back and full-back.
Midway through 1979, Grambeau was cleared to Woodville, before moving to West Torrens for 1980. The two South Australian clubs argued over his clearance when Woodville refused an offer of $10,000, arguing they had paid Melbourne more than that to sign him and had also incurred expenses bringing him to Adelaide. Grambeau was sued for breach of contract after leaving West Torrens at the end of 1981. He wanted to fly in for games during the last year of his deal but the club insisted he had to live in Adelaide. He later returned to Victoria to play for Prahran between 1982 and 1985 before moving to Queensland.
