After winning just two games in their first six years, St Kilda were again hovering around the bottom of the ladder in June 1903. They were above the winless Melbourne by virtue of a draw against Essendon, but had lost every other match by more than 50 points and had a dreadful percentage. The visitors were handicapped by a raft of injuries, missing Herring, Sowden, Conquest, Dalrymple and H. Hunter.

The home side wrapped the game up with a 29-0 blitz in the first quarter, but Melbourne might have made the result more interesting if they hadn't attacked so poorly in the next three quarters, usually putting their forwards on impossible angles for their shots.

St Kilda won six more games for the year, their most successful yet, while Melbourne only narrowly avoided the wooden spoon.

Langley, Young and the two Gardners were best.

Notes
