With the wooden spoon all but dodged for another year, the Demons travelled to Waverley to take on top four fancies St Kilda and were duly thrashed. The Saints barely stepped out of first gear in beating up their inexperienced and outmatched opponents.
The defence tried hard to keep the Saints forwards at bay, but the supply was so constant that they eventually had to crack. It was nothing like the Demon side which had won a gallant victory against Richmond a week earlier.
Best were Davis, Molloy and Dillon. Sinclair (broken nose) was replaced in the selected side by George Lakes, and then Lakes replaced Townsend at three quarter time. Graham Osborne was an unused reserve.
The only good news to come out of the day was North Melbourne losing to Richmond and ensuring Melbourne couldn't finish last again.
