St. Kilda win by 76 points
Just over a season after their 1964 premiership triumph the shifting fortunes of the Demons couldn't have been any better demonstrated than by the spanking the beaten 1965 Grand Finallists dished out to them in Round 1.
St Kilda were building the side that would win them their only Premiership that September and didn't need to debut a new player. Melbourne had seven, the product of their disappointing campaign the year before and a black death style injury crisis during the pre-season.
Melbourne stayed with the Saints for most of the first quarter, until a lapse in time-on saw St. Kilda booted three goals to wrest the advantage away.
If anyone thought that missing the finals in 1965 had been a mere bump in the road they were forced to reevaluate by a hungry Saints side that kicked 12 goals to two after half-time as the Demons put the white flag up shortly after the restart. Beaten in the packs, and in the air they looked anything but contenders.
Best were Groom, Bourke and first gamer Burston.
