Stuck near the foot of the ladder with only one win, the Demons had more misery when Garry Lyon (wrist) and Greg Healy (hamstring)) were unable to play. They further shook up their squad by dropping Brett Lovett after 117 consecutive games, but were still thrashed. Even with Paul Bryce holding Tony Lockett to 3.5, they were beaten by 10 goals.
The game was effectively over at quarter time after St Kilda kicked seven goals to one, Melbourne narrowly won the second quarter but things didn't get any better after the break, with the Saints extending the final margin by another three goals.
John Northey angrily fended off questions from journalists about his future after the match, but won support from President Ian Ridley who threatened to resign if Northey was sacked. He assured that Northey would coach out the remainder of the year as contracted.
Best were Schwarz, Bryce and J. Stynes.
