Having fallen half a game outside of the top four, Melbourne found themselves up against last placed and winless St Kilda and ran away with a massive victory. After half a season as the playing coach of the Seconds, Jack Mueller returned to the senior side and kicked six goals.

Seven goals in the first quarter got Melbourne off to a good start, but it was the second half when they booted 11 goals to two which pushed the margin towards - and eventually over - triple figures.

Amongst the massacre Norm Smith kicked three goals, but suffered a hamstring injury which would keep him out for two weeks.

McGrath was Melbourne's best, along with Rodda and Mueller. Billy Deans suffered a broken nose and concussion.
