Originally drafted by St Kilda in 1993, Heppell played his best game for the the club on debut against Adelaide where he had 14 touches but managed just four more matches over two seasons before being delisted.

The Demons threw him a lifeline but he only appeared twice in consecutive weeks during 1995 and was delisted at the end of the year.

Heppell moved to the SANFL and played in a Reserves premiership with Norwood as well as 10 senior games between 1996 and 1998 before landing a job as Reserves coach with the Box Hills Hawks. He also coached school football at Caulfield Grammar and was in charge of Mitcham in the Eastern Football League.

Played for Old Carey from 2002 to 2007.
