Gerald 'Gerry' Donnelly was a wingman who started his career with Essendon Juniors before transferring to South Australia. He had previously been a schoolboy running champion, and won a number of professional footraces. In 1929 he started favourite in the Stawell Gift but was unplaced.

In 1925, Donnelly returned to Victoria and joined Melbourne. He was selected to play for Victoria in his first year, but was forced to move to North Melbourne when the league ruled he had lived in their zone before moving to South Australia. He became captain/coach of North in 1926. In 1927 he moved to Albury as part of his employment and coached St Patrick's. He returned to North in 1930. After his opportunities with the Shinboners dried up he moved to Essendon during the season for three games more.

Donnelly died in 1937 after a length illness.

His brother Andy played 12 games for Essendon in 1920 and 1921, and he was also cousin of Essendon player Charlie Hardy.
