Cleared to Melbourne in April 1932 defender "Ginger" Ryan was one of the rare Melbourne recruits from the northern VFA clubs, but never managed to fully lodge himself in the senior side before leaving for Collingwood. A rare backman of his era who could kick with both feet, he spent five years at Victoria Park but never managed more than nine games in a year.

Ryan suffered a serious back injury in the 1933 Seconds Semi Final, where he was able to play out the game and admitted to hospital several hours later with spinal issues. He was discharged a few days later but didn't play another senior game.

Notes
Some sources show his date of birth as 26 September 1909. Also shown as 'Allen'. A player called Ryan is shown as being recruited from Sale in 1932 but is unlikely to be the same person.
