Having opened their season with ten straight victories, St. Kilda fans had been dreaming of breaking their long premiership drought but the side had lost four of their last five - a big loss against Adelaide in round 14 one of the major disappointments of the season.

Melbourne fans were also dreaming of great things, and on a Sunday at the MCG they were the ones who went home happy with their side having racked up a huge win.

The Saints trailed by just three points early in the third quarter, but a blunder between Xavier Clarke and Troy Schwarze allowed the Demons to goal and turn the game on its head.

With Brad Miller out injured, Ben Holland played as a true key forward for the first time in Melbourne colours and was outstanding with four goals. The side took 25 marks inside the forward 50.

Nick Riewoldt was a lone hand up front for St. Kilda with 9 goals. He was replacing Fraser Gehrig who was out injured. Nathan Brown beat Stephen Milne, and Troy Broadbridge kept Aaron Hamill under control.

Daniel Bell made his debut when Brad Miller was a late withdrawal with a gastric complaint.
