Tymms started his career at St. Kilda with eight games in 1922 and 1923 but moved to Prahran when he couldn't make the grade at the Junction Oval. Invited to train with the Demons in 1925 he played two games, but spent most of his time playing with the Public Service side and was one of their best.

He returned to Melbourne as a regular defender in 1926 and was one of the best defenders in the league as the side won their second premiership. He represented the VFL in a match against the Wimmera League in 1927, and against the VFA in 1931. In a 1929 interstate match in Adelaide he was injured running into a goalpost and missed five weeks.

In 1930 he was pursued by VFA side Northcote, but turned them down to stay at Melbourne. He was married shortly before Melbourne's last game of the season against Hawthorn. Anticipating an easy win he asked for the week off, but the Reds lost and missed the finals. He applied for a clearance to Camberwell in the 1932 pre-season but was rejected.

In early 1933 Tymms was a candidate for the vacant coaching job at Hawthorn, but his application for a clearance was refused and he played the rest of his career at Melbourne.

Tymms later worked as a journalist for The Argus, as Richmond's secretary/VFL delegate from 1955 until 1962 and treasurer between 1960 and 1963. He was later named a Richmond life member and served as a player's advocate at the tribunal.
