Biggest win at East Melbourne

On a rain soaked ground Essendon turned out with their best side of the year, while Melbourne were without several of their best players. They welcomed back Australian test player Harry Graham who had played for them in the VFA during the early 1890s before dedicating himself to cricket, and he was an able replacement for the absent Parkin.

The visitors had the use of the breeze in the first quarter and made good use of it by dominating the wings and kicking four goals. They attacked against the wind at the start of the second and Graham got a goal on debut. They extended their lead before half-time but neither team managed a goal in the third term - with Melbourne content to play the ball along the boundary, run the ball out at every opportunity and protect their lead.

Best were Snowden, McGinis and Gardner.

Notes
Ryan is shown as scoring four times from five shots in the first quarter. Not clear if these were all goals.
