July 1859 match vs St Kilda

Saturday 30 July and Saturday 13 August - Richmond Paddock

Melbourne 2
St Kilda 0

Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: Petrie 1, Wardill 1

With the MCC withdrawing their permission for the club to play on the MCG due to rain, Melbourne played on a ground roped off in Richmond Paddock. As with earlier games the players were inconvenienced by spectators spilling onto the ground.

St Kilda won the toss, but it was who Petrie opened the scoring for Melbourne after an hour. The match continued until it was too dark to play and the two sides agreed to adjourn for two weeks while St. Kilda took on South Yarra.

The two sides returned to Richmond Paddock on 13 August and were successful in getting the second and decisive goal through Wardill to give them wins over both the other well-known metropolitan clubs.
