After serving notice that they would be a force again with a high scoring win over Geelong in the opening round the Demons further enhanced their credentials by finally winning against the Hawks at Waverley after 11 losses.

Hawthorn may have been missing Jason Dunstall, and Chris Langford injured his hamstring the opening term, but it was no excuse for being eight goals down at quarter time. Melbourne were already three goals to one up when Langford went off and added another six by the break - with three to Greg Doyle. He had four, along with three from Jim Stynes in a big day out for the resting ruckmen.

The Demons eased off after the break as the job was done. Their scoring efforts weren't helped by Allen Jakovich booting 4.10 when he should have been dominant in the absence of Langford.

Neale Balme hosed down the excitement around his side, saying: "I don't know if we are the glamour side because we don't know how good the other sides are yet."

Best were Lyon, Jakovich and Tingay. Steven Febey suffered a cut eye.
