Debuted in 1904 with the Saints as a 19 year old before missing the next four seasons and then reappearing in 1909 at Essendon where he played nine games for the season. After playing just one match with them in 1910, the first round of the season, Whelpton joined the Redlegs, made his debut in the centre in Round 9 and played the next week before missing the rest of the season.

In 1911 he played his first game until Round 10 and added only three more for the season before leaving the club. During his career at Melbourne he also worked as a school teacher.

Enlisted in the Army in August 1914 and served in the 15th Australian Machine Gun Company during World War I.
