Played with Melbourne's Seconds before joining VFA side Sandringham in 1940.

Copsey played one season with the Demons before joining St Kilda in 1947. He added 13 more VFL games over two seasons, temporarily retiring at the start of 1948, before joining Caulfield City as playing coach in 1949.

In 1951 he returned to senior football to play for Moorabbin in their first VFA season, first having to win a reprieve from a suspension he'd received after joining the Demons from Sandringham without a clearance.
