The follower and goal sneak left St Kilda in 1909, citing disappointment with the Seasiders' play in 1908 as his reason for leaving after seven seasons. St Kilda initially refused him a clearance, suggesting he didn't have a reasonable excuse for wanting to leave, and after playing two games for the Reds early in the season they were directed by the VFL to stop selecting him. The issue was cleared before Round 9, and he played five more games for the club.
Cowell was expected to reappear in 1910 but did not play another game. In 1919 he was became coach of VFA side Camberwell.

Notes
Probably the Jim Cowell who coached Pakenham in 1914. Possibly the Cowell who was on Melbourne's list in 1914.
