Alex Hall was the first man appointed Melbourne coach in 1907. Hall and Checker Hughes are the only people to have had two full-time stints in the job, Hughes even returned a third time as a caretaker for one week in 1965 after Norm Smith was sacked. When Smith was re-instated Checker went back into retirement.
