Described as a "classy forward" during his time with St Kilda, Boyd started his career with the Seasiders in 1915 but missed two seasons in 1916 and 1917 when when the club was in recess due to the war.

When St Kilda returned in 1918 he stayed with them for two years then moved to Melbourne before Round 6, 1920 where he played three years for a much lesser goalkicking return than he had at his first club.

Midway through 1922 he was cleared to Brighton, and remained there until being cleared to Port Fairy in May 1927. He returned to the VFA with Sandringham from 1929 to 1933 where he kicked 101 goals in 47 games and after retiring midway through 1930 coached them in the second half of the year.
