Winger who debuted for Collingwood in 1930 but was dropped for the winning Grand Final after playing in the Preliminary Final. Joined Beechworth in 1932 then returned to Collingwood in 1933. Kelly then spent three seasons at Melbourne, and was cleared to Essendon in the 1937 pre-season. He played three seasons there before crossing to the VFA to captain/coach Port Melbourne to the 1940 Premiership. He played 40 games for Port over two seasons.

In 1942 he rejoined the VFL ranks with St Kilda and spent three years with the Saints before moving back to the country as captain/coach with Yallourn North. He later returned to coach Port for a second stint in 1945 and 1946.

His brother J. Kelly trialed with Melbourne in the 1935 pre-season.
