In Round 2, 1999 Melbourne was upset by a rampant Saints side, now just over a season later they were able to continue their improvement with a devastating win.

Early on it seemed the Saints were good things. 16 points in front late in the first quarter, and 10 points up ten minutes into the second but when Brad Green goalled the Demons turned on and kicked another four in the next six minutes to wrest the lead away. The game had been turned on its head by a courageous Russell Robertson mark when he ran back into a crowded pack in the forward fifty. The side had kicked just three goals in 40 minutes until that point.

With Barry Hall off the ground with a corked thigh, Peter Everitt was dragged out of the forward line and into the ruck where Troy Simmonds and Jeff White were dominating. From there St. Kilda found it difficult to score, while Melbourne's forwards ran riot.

The Melbourne midfielders took control, and the Saints managed just four tackles after half time. Andrew Leoncelli and Shane Woewodin ran rings around their opponents. Even 36 possessions from Robert Harvey couldn't help the hapless Saints. David Neitz entered the game under an injury cloud after a knee injury suffered a week earlier, and was held to one goal but it didn't stop the Demons racking up a huge score.

Tim Watson said "You're not going to beat Dimboola Thirds playing like that", and was abused from St. Kilda fans on his way into the changerooms.

Adem Yze and Guy Rigoni were also amongst the best in Melbourne's highest score against St. Kilda since Round 20, 1977, and biggest win since Round 12, 1955.
