Recruited as a defender, Geddes played in the ruck of the 1900 Grand Final and was one of Melbourne's four goalkickers for the day.

St Kilda attempted to recruit him as a defender in 1903 and despite standing out of football that year Geddes' attempt at a clearance in the 1904 pre-season was blocked. The league's permit committee deemed that his reasons for wanting to change clubs were inadequate and that if he wanted to play it would have to be with Melbourne. In July that year he went to VFA side Richmond VFA and played 11 games.

After his brief trip to the Association he finally made it made it to St Kilda in May 1905. He played one season at the Junction Oval before moving to West Torrens in the SANFL, coaching them them for two seasons in 1914 and 1915.
