Topped the St Kilda goalkicking in 1915, his first season, but didn't play again until 1919 due to the first World War. In 1916 he enlisted in the army, and that year played in a match for servicemen in London in front of spectators including the Prince of Wales and King Manuel of Portugal.
He returned in 1921 and topped the Saints goalkicking every year until 1923. He initially retired at the end of that year, and rejected overtures from Melbourne before returning to the Saints in June 1924.
In 1999 he was named in the Melbourne Grammar Team of the Century.
