Recruited by St Kilda after playing 117 games for South Fremantle between 1966 and 1971, including the 1970 premiership, Scott kicked 97 goals in his last WAFL season despite his side only winning nine games. He also played five matches for Western Australia from 1967 onwards.

An exchange between South Fremantle and St Kilda had been on the cards the previous season but had collapsed. The Saints eventually got their man but only played 18 matches for them before joining the Demons - always seeking the next big goalkicker - in 1974. The Saints swapped him to Melbourne alongside Greg Wood for rover Paul Callery who had walked out on Melbourne when Ian Ridley was sacked as coach. He played one season before being dropped from the list, then joining Parkdale in the Federal League.
