After training with Richmond and Hawthorn in consecutive off-seasons, Grant was signed by St Kilda shortly before his 16th birthday. In his last year in Tasmania he'd been captain of the state's Under 16 team and an All-Australian player.

Debuting in 1984 he played 10 games across his first two seasons before becoming a regular between 1986 and 1992. In 1991 he played for Tasmania and was an All-Australian. and was picked as a Tasmanian state player and All-Australian in 1991. At the end of 1992, St Kilda agreed to trade Grant to Sydney in exchange for Barry Mitchell but were unable to convince Mitchell to join them. Grant was reportedly offered the Sydney captaincy but preferred to join Richmond. The clubs were unable to agree on a deal and he remained with the Saints until the end of 1995.

In earlier years Grant had played full-forward at St Kilda when Tony Lockett was unavailable, and kicked career best hauls of five against the Demons in 1986 and 1990, but came to Melbourne as a defender in the twilight of his career. He debuted in the heavy Round 1, 1996 defeat to Geelong, playing seven games until Round 8.

Grant joined VFL side Sandringham in 1997, appearing in 53 games for them and playing in the 1997 premiership.
