Still winless, Melbourne travelled to St Kilda having put in an encouraging performance in Geelong a week earlier but left thrashed. On a fine day for football the marked improvement the Reds had put in seven days before evaporated and they were beaten comfortably.
It didn't help them that St Kilda put in their best performance of the season, but even that came after they had gone in so confident of victory that they experimented with their team. It didn't cost them, and it took until the last quarter when Melbourne almost doubled their score for the visitors to gain any respectability from the performance.
Dave McNamara and Billy Schmidt both kicked seven for the winners.
Trahair, Evans and Lugton were best.
