Image A week after recording their first win of the season, Melbourne was all but abandoned by its fans for a Sunday afternoon twilight match in cold and greasy conditions. Forecast rain failed to hit, but the Demons still failed to kick a goal in the first half.

Martin Blake, writing in the Age described Melbourne's gameplan, Melbourne overused handball so much that there was a Bronx cheer in the second quarter when Paul Johnson, who had a mistake-prone day, hoofed the Sherrin to the skies after a string of awful handballs from teammates.

It took until midway through the third quarter, by which time the Demons were 0.6 and threatening to go goalless, for Lynden Dunn to get their first. Three goals in five minutes during the last quarter cut the margin to 17 points, but that was as good as it got for a side whose forward line had failed to fire. Both Brad Miller and Michael Newton had dirty days, and Newton hit the post with an ill-advised banana from five metres out after receiving a free kick.

Best were Moloney, Frawley and Davey. Jared Rivers was fined $2600 for umpire contact.
