After only winning one game in their worst season yet, the MCC continued to grapple with the idea of paying players under the table like the rest of the competition. Only two of their players took any payment, including expenses, but they still attracted 84 players to pre-season trials.

Melbourne attempted to sign former MCC cricketer Billy Monagle as a coach. He had played in Perth and the Victorian country before twice being refused a clearance to South Melbourne. Monagle's application to join Melbourne was denied on the grounds that in 1904 and 1905 it had been alleged that he was a professional. Despite the open-secret of players being paid at other clubs, he was banned from playing or coaching on any league ground. Alex Hall was given the job instead and Monagle returned to VFA side Northcote.

The club changed its secretary, with Amos Norcott voted out after seven seasons and replaced by George Beachcroft. The MCC held a meeting in February for the purpose of 'considering the best manner of reorganising the Melbourne Football Team and executive for the following season". Their work bore fruit, with six more wins than the disastrous 1906 campaign.

After Round 7, Bernie Nolan resigned the vice captaincy due to the time required for his studies. Hugh Purse took the job.

AA Aitken replaced the late RW McLeod as one of Melbourne's VFL delegates in July.
