Melbourne desperately needed a win, and at least two of their last three, to sneak into the finals. Earlier in the season they had been unbeaten after five games before falling apart in the middle of the year.

North also needed a win, they were trying to sure up a double chance and third place. The top eight was so close that a Melbourne win would put them in the running for the double chance with two games left, and they did the job.

Melbourne had winners on all parts of the ground, with Andy Lovell kicking five from the midfield, Garry Lyon adding another three and a strong defensive effort by Sean Wight and David Neitz. The defenders held John Longmire and Wayne Carey quiet to give their side a big chance to win.

The Demons led at every change, but with their midfield continually getting the ball forward North was condemned to a third consecutive defeat.

Best were Wight, Tingay and G. Lovett.
