After debuting in 1905 defender Hubert Norman "Bert" Parke failed to play a game for Carlton in the 1906 home and away season but was named in the Grand Final after a teammate was injured. Unfortunately for him, Parke also injured himself and missed out on playing in the decider.
The next year he joined Melbourne and managed 30 games across the next six years, suffering a broken leg in Round 6, 1910 and playing just one more match in 1912 before returning to Carlton in early 1913. He was the first Blue to ever return to the club after leaving.
He served in the army before World War I but as he was employed in a protected industry he couldn't fight in Europe until 1918 but when he was sailing to Europe the armistice was signed and he didn't have to enter combat.
