The defender played seven seasons for the Fuschias before moving to the country to play for South Bendigo. He remained in contention for selection in 1910, but a rule excluding players with lived more than 25 miles from the city meant he didn't feature in another senior game. He had previously played for the club in the second half of 1906, transferring mid-year. Rival club Long Gully launched a protest against South including him.

Mills then moved to the Goulburn Valley league and played with Rochester, occasionally travelling to the city to play with Carlton. He captain/coached the side in 1913 and 1914.
