What opened up as a good standard game soon descended into a crowded slog where the quality of play declined noticeably. The crowding also raised tempers, and there were a number of near skirmishes in the second and third quarters.

They two sides were barely out of each other's sight all day, and Melbourne's break in the last quarter was the biggest of the day.

It took until the last few minutes for the game to open up, and for the home side to snatch victory. With four minutes left Melbourne led by 10 points before Geelong stormed home with three goals in a row. They kicked the sealer with 30 seconds to go before the final bell.

Best were Onyons, Coutie and Symons.
