A third straight win kept Melbourne in the hunt for an unlikely finals berth if they could continue racking up victories in the last three matches of the year.

Heavy rain fell shortly before the game, and on a slippery ground Fitzroy took an early lead thanks to Melbourne's poor kicking for goal, and the overly eager attackers only managed one goal from 15 scoring shots in the first half.

When they sorted their accuracy out in the second half it was the difference, with four goals to one in the third term. Finally their superior marketing, smart passing and better play started to pay off.

The forwards started to lose direction again at the end, but Fitzroy's spirit had been flattened and Melbourne held on.

Best were Strong, Pearce and Monk. Onyons injured his knee.
