Needing to win five of their last seven games to qualify for the newly expanded final eight, Melbourne took on a battle scarred Hawks side with an injury-depleted defence. It was the perfect recipe for Allen Jakovich to run riot one last time in what would turn out to be his final game for the club. He kicked eight goals, was dragged by the coach and was seen abusing field umpire Murray Bird.

Six minutes in the third quarter won the game for Melbourne, with their narrow lead being doubled to give them a six goal gap. Jakovich had kicked three in the first half, then another three in the third and two in the last.

At the other end Sean Wight held Jason Dunstall to two goals.

Best were Jakovich, Lyon and S. Febey. David Neitz was suspended for one match for striking Taylor with a fist to the head in the first quarter. Sean Charles was a late withdrawal due to a virus and Graeme Yeats hurt his knee.
