A defender and midfielder, Fitzpatrick represented the VFL against the Bendigo League in a representative match during 1912.

Left Melbourne for Stratford midway through 1910 and only returned to the VFL in Round 9, 1911. In July 1912 he joined Maffra.

After 81 games over seven seasons Fitzpatrick initially requested a clearance to Prahran, then joined Richmond in July 1913 season and played out the rest of the season there. He rejoined Maffra in 1914, and was cleared back to Melbourne in the middle of 1915 but did not play another senior match before retiring from football in 1919.

His brother trialled in the 1915 pre-season but didn't join the club.
