The Melbourne revival continued with another strong win in a game where the two sides' fortunes fluctuated several times during during the day. Melbourne's better use of handball and ability to take their chances on goal were the deciding factor in the end.

Fitzroy got the first goal of the game, but Leith almost instantly equalised and after each side had six shots on goal for the quarter Melbourne came out one goal on top. The second quarter was also equal, and Melbourne too a lead of seven points into the half.

Fitzroy sliced two off throughout the third to set up a blockbuster last term, and they attacked hard in the opening minutes of the last term to make it look like a certainty that they were going to win. It took the fine efforts of Pearce and Purse in Melbourne's backline to keep the ball out of their goal. Leith scored a goal from an angle, much to the protest of Fitzroy who thought it had missed, but the ledger was settled shortly afterwards when the Maroons took advantage of Melbourne losing Neilson to injury to score a goal of their own.

With 10 minutes to play Fitzroy had taken the lead, but a goal to Coutie put Melbourne back in front and they stayed there until the final bell.

Best were Cope, Mills and Purse.
