A win in Round 1 had matched Melbourne's total from all of 1906, and after two losses they bounced back to double that year's tally.
The two sides spent the first half in a rough and tumble battle, with little to recommend it as a football match. The Pies had a lead of eight points, and when Drohan got a goal midway through the quarter it looked like Melbourne would take over but the home side fought back and resumed the same margin as at half time.
When the fourth quarter started Melbourne almost immediately wiped out the lead, kicking a goal and two behinds to level the score. They briefly drew ahead before the scores were levelled again, but two goals in a row to Melbourne gave them an 11 point lead. Homan got a goal against his old teammates and Melbourne were home.
Best were Onyons, C. Johnston and Harris.
