Speaking at the club's annual meeting, the chairman of the MCC Mr. W McBean reiterated the club's commitment to operating as a fully amateur side who fielded players that were in it for the love of the game rather than cash payment. The league was still officially amateur but other clubs were making side-payments to players, and Melbourne's refusal to join in saw them drop to the bottom of the ladder for the first time despite winning two of their first three games.

Before the season Melbourne proposed players wear numbers so they could be better identified by spectators but the idea was not adopted by other clubs.

A proposed mid-season trip to Rutherglen did not occur, with the team visiting Gippsland instead.
