The away team started favourites, but Melbourne performed well to win on their own merits. The match was played on a heavy, slippery ground - especially along the cricket pitch area in the centre, and this might have contributed to their improved performance as they handled the conditions as if it were a dry day while Geelong laboured.

Melbourne had the breeze in the first quarter, and while they held Geelong scoreless they failed to take proper advantage themselves with only one goal from seven scoring shots. Geelong started the second quarter well with the first goal, but were still four points behind at the long break. They again looked the better team early in the third before Melbourne improved their performance and took over. Three goals in the last minutes of the quarter set up a four goal lead.

Play became severely congested in the last quarter and after 15 minutes the only scores of the quarter had been four Melbourne behinds. Geelong belatedly added 2.1 but it was too late to threaten.

Best were Gardiner, Onyons and Homan.
