The game marked the first time the Saints had kicked more than 100pts. It was their 173rd VFL game. The match was played on what remains the second warmest June day ever, with a maximum temperature of 22.3 degrees.
The visitors showed their intent from the start, immediately putting Melbourne's defence under siege. Other than a handful of rushes forward, the ball remained in front of Melbourne's goal for the entire quarter. The sides kicked a goal each in the second, leaving St Kilda 17 points ahead.
A brief wind-assisted rally at the start of the last term got the Reds within a few points before St Kilda blew them away, the Seasiders were irresistible in kicking 5.6, running away to an easy win.
Best were Park, Pearce and the Johnston brothers.
