The Seasiders won the previous clash between the sides by 57 points, and with a full strength team against opposition suffering an injury crisis they were expected to win again.

Melbourne won the toss and were given the advantage of a strong breeze. They used it perfectly, kicking the five goals to one that ultimately carried them over the line. St Kilda were on the attack first, but failed to take advantage and conceded the first goal on the break to Smith. The home side got the second goal before conceding the next four before the break.

On the change of ends the play became crowded, helping restrict St Kilda to three goals, while Melbourne failed to score. St Kilda continued to press on in the third quarter, and had the only goal of the term until late when Johnson set up an 11 point lead. Each side kicked one goal in the final term, leaving Melbourne comfortable winners.
