"Joker" Hall began his playing career with Essendon in the VFA in 1890 after being turned down by North Melbourne. He remained with them into the VFL, playing 27 times for Essendon before moving to St Kilda as coach in 1906 where he added one further senior game, playing under an assumed name.

Hall joined the Redlegs as coach in 1907 and remained in the role until the end of the 1909 season when he was replaced by Eddie Drohan. He moved to Richmond and became their first VFL coach. Hall returned in 1911 and stayed in the role until the end of the 1913 season.

In 1919 Hall become associated with the club again as part of the coaching panel and as a scout, and coached the club's junior side from at least 1922 through 1924. Despite some suggestions in the press that he was likely to get the senior coaching job in 1924 after Percy Wilson retired, he missed out but did eventually return to the VFL as Hawthorn's first senior coach in 1925. He then coached the Richmond Seconds from 1926 until 1928. In 1941 Hall served as head trainer for South Melbourne.

Notes
May have also played for West Melbourne in 1905. Some sources have him as coach in 1914, but Football Records and newspapers from the time show that he was coach of Williamstown that year and that Len Incigneri coached the side.
