Having gotten their season back on track by beating Brisbane a week earlier, Melbourne continued their revival with a thumping win over the Hawks. Hawthorn had a serious lack of pace in the middle of the ground and Melbourne exploited it to open up a three goal lead at the first break.

By half time five goals from Garry Lyon had killed the game off, with the Melbourne skipper only stopped by a leg injury which prompted Neil Balme to rest him during the second half. At the other end, Jason Dunstall played the full four quarters and kicked four goals but was generally well held by Sean Wight and was the only Hawk to kick a goal from the five minute mark of the second quarter until the 20 minute mark of the last. Andrew Obst tagged Darren Jarman, reducing his effectiveness.

Shaun Smith took up where Lyon left off with three goals in the second half, ably assisted by David Neitz who took 12 marks at centre half-forward.

Best were Stynes, Neitz and Tingay. Debutante Gaspar was a late replacement for ((Paul Prymke) (back). Lyon strained his quad and Stynes rolled his ankle.

Neil Balme said: "We are playing with confidence and flair, which makes us more likely to kick goals."
