After missing all of 1906 the wingman returned for a Round 9, 1907 single match the next year. Gardner then joined University in their debut season and played for them throughout 1908 and 1909.
Brother of Corrie and Eric Gardner.
In 1912 he travelled to the Balkan War as a member of the Red Cross and during World War I served in the British Army, reaching the rank of Captain. He later become one of Melbourne's most prominent ophthalmologists.
