John "Jack" Smith, was a rover/half-forward flanker who started his career with the Shinboners in the VFA, captaining his side to the runner-up spot in 1905 before joining Melbourne halfway through the next season.

He was cleared to Launceston to coach before the 1910 season but returned to Melbourne to play 10 games in 1911. Before the 1912 season he returned to Tasmania to coach Cananore.
