After several disappointing seasons Melbourne underwent a rebuild, cutting 10 players and losing two to retirement at the end of 1933. Checker Hughes started with just 22 players to build his new side from, leading to 13 players debuting during the season. The Seconds also cut 10 players from their list, even after three consecutive premierships. Despite the lack of experience, the side improved from three to nine wins, and the Seconds won their competition again.
Melbourne's pre-season access to the MCG was affected by a long-running district cricket final, which started in early April and was still going on April 28.
Early in the year club secretary Percy Page was contacted by a South Australian follower called Goldsworthy, after he'd been approached by an alleged representative of Melbourne. Page responded that the person was not involved with the club, and that they had no interest in signing South Australian players that year.
The VFL reintroduced the flick pass for the first time since 1925, amending the handball rule so that the ball could be clearly held in one hand and knocked with the other. After a successful trial during the 1933 finals, an electric clock was permanently introduced at the MCG.
Melbourne made national headlines before the Round 10 match against Essendon when it was announced that prominent supporter and former committeeman Win Berry would award a prize to the best barracker.
The Demons played two exhibition matches in Sydney, one on a Saturday afternoon and one on a Sunday morning. Five players who were running late due to work commitments became the first VFL players to fly to a game by plane. On the return journey the plane made an emergency landing in a field in Wallan.
Melbourne's VFL delegates were George Cathie and Harry Parkin. The club lost £1600 for the season, income of £1866 pounds and expenditure of £3468 pounds, which was covered by the MCC.
