The first visit of a league club to Echuca since Collingwood played a game in the town seven years before. The VFL sponsored the trip in an attempt to increase interest in the game in the town, but Melbourne had already decided to visit Echuca as it was the home town of Jack Mueller.

Echuca kicked the first goal, but Melbourne finished off the first quarter well to take a lead of 18 points into the first break. The Demons got the first goal of the second quarter before the locals rallied and put together their best patch of the day, taking a four point lead at half time.

When the Demons got serious in the third term they opened up a match winning lead, kicking 11 goals to one for the rest of the game. They got 6.8 to 0.1 for the remainder of the quarter.

Best were Kelly, Glass and Longhurst.
