Melbourne welcomed Geelong for a crucial match in the context of the upcoming finals series. The Reds' chances of sneaking into the top four depended on them continuing to win, and for both other results to go their way and for their percentage to improve. The Pivotonians, on the other hand, were top of the ladder but only one win out of fourth place. By quarter time they had booted 10 goals with the wind, taken a nine goal lead and the match was over.
It didn't help that Allan La Fontaine had been in bed ill with flu for three days before the game, and was beaten badly in the first quarter. When Les Jones took over his position in the centre of the ground after the change of ends Melbourne stemmed the bleeding. The home side won the second quarter five goals to three, but were still 55 points behind.
The margin didn't get much worse after half time, but the damage had been done. Melbourne's season had been a vast improvement on 1933, but they wouldn't improve enough to trouble the top four. It was Geelong's highest ever score against Melbourne.
Best were Mueller, Taylor and Jones. 19th man was Williams.
The Governor, Lord Huntington, was present and met the players before the game.
Captain Colin Niven said "We were simply overwhelmed. Geelong was too good everywhere. Their strong ruck work, marking and position play were big factors."
