More wins in the first seven weeks of the new season than they'd had in all of 1933 put Melbourne on the edge of the top four approaching the mid-point of the season, but a seven goal to one first quarter by the Blues gave them an insurmountable 41 point lead. Carlton had two goals on the board before Melbourne went near their goal, and the visitors' first major didn't fall to Libbis until they were more than five goals behind. The Blues ended the quarter with their seventh goal and were as good as home.
Carlton only added eight points to the margin over the rest of the game, but this was more to do with their lack of exertion than better play from Melbourne. The Redlegs finally began to gain some ground at the end of the second quarter, but while they fought vigorously they lacked the system to chip away at the lead. They were too slow in comparison to the Blues and their half-forward line was letting them down regularly.
Best were La Fontaine, Taylor and Smith. 19th man was Bennett.
